Wine Regions
Alentejo
The Alentejo wine region is one of the largest wine regions in Portugal, with 22 000 hectares, about 10% of the total vineyards in the country.
This region is very dry, hot and dominated by extensive plateaus. The many hours of sun and the high temperatures in the Summer allow the perfect grape maturation. The wine culture of the region dates back to roman presence, between 31 and 27 a.C.In the 1980s the Alentejo was modernized, in terms of production, with investments, new producers resulting in the Wine Region demarcation in 1988. The region is divided in eight sub-regions, with DOC wines: Reguengos, Borba, Vidigueira, Évora, Granja-Amareleja, Portalegre and Moura.
